One of the lamest & shameful aspects of the response to the Kashoggi murder is the self-serving, disingenuous whitewashing by ex-Obama officials of their own role in supporting the Saudi war on Yemen. This from @AmbassadorRice is jaw-dropping revisionism: nytimes.com/2018/10/29/opi…
- "refuse to employ responsible targeting techniques" suggests that invading and bombing a defenseless, impoverished country without UN authorization would be ok if only the Saudis had done it in a "responsible" way
-"The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen shares direct responsibility, along with the Houthi rebels and Iran, for the worst humanitarian crisis in the world": "shared" responsibility when UN attributes vast majority of civilian deaths to Saudi bombing, blockade. Iran's role is minor.
-“defend Saudi territory from Houthi incursions” — this is a b.s. rationale, there was no serious threat of Houthi incursions until the U.S.-backed Saudi bombing began, as ex-Obama official Rob Malley acknowledged to me: therealnews.com/stories/amid-c…
- Obama admin “finally moved to curtail arms sales….” — Obama curtailed a portion (cluster bombs & guided missiles) in 2016, but cooperation continued, w/ US refueling Saudi aircraft. The “constraints” that were “flouted” were effectively meaningless. nytimes.com/2016/12/13/us/…
