The idea that y'all are looking out for the marginalized by condemning antifa is insulting. You aren't preventing some broader normalization of people going to folks' houses. Trump fans aren't concerned with mirroring your morality on any level. Worry about fighting *them*.
And as many Black and brown folks have pointed out, the vilification of antifa follows a model that will ultimately fall down on us, as marginalized people.
You have to be living in a dream world to believe antifa is the escalation. Trump fans have attempted to assassinate his political opponents. They committed a massacre at a synogogue. They have gunned people down. The escalations are ongoing and they're coming from the other side
If you think you're gonna set a standard of respectability that's gonna reel in this whole fascism thing, you need to get real and quick.
And I'll tell you something about going to people's houses: it's not actually off limits in organizing. Do y'all know how many times we've been to the mayor's house in Chicago? We literally showed up with lights once. (We won this campaign btw.)
I actually wrote about the role that protests at Emanuel's home may have played in his decision not to pursue reelection. It's a hard hitting tactic. When you are escalating a campaign against such an insulated enemy, you make them feel less insulated. theappeal.org/chicago-mayor-…
Ppl who've never done on-the-ground work, or won victories w street level organizing, or kept Nazis out of their backyards w phone-ins and other resistance, love to preach about how it's all done. They don't know. They are speaking from a patchwork of idealizations. No strategy.
When rich white ppl try to tell you how to organize, or what is or is not OK w in the realm of protest, remember: 1) they are not experts in anything resistance-related 2) they are not guardians of your well being 3) they are not strategic campaign planners or community defenders
And I just really want to reemphasize that scolding antifa does NOTHING to hold back the right. They continue to terrorize & the new normal is dragged further into their fascism. They're the ones making that happen. NO ONE on the left is responsible for their actions on any level
To see an equivalency between antifa and white supremacist terror is to believe that right and wrong simply do not matter. But the difference between being for Nazism and against it is actually p important -- and it's much more important than your notions of civility.
We cannot halt the escalation of white supremacist violence by example. They don't care about our moral examples. They applaud the suffering Trump inflicts. It's shocking that so many people still believe that the status quo offers any protection. The status quo is Nazi-occupied.
