11/11/48 from 8:30 to 9:45 pm on WCBS' "Film Theatre of the Air.'' 1929 talkie from Tiffany, Poverty Row studio run by John M. Stahl. MGM purchased negatives when it went bust in 1932, used to fuel GWTW's Atlanta fire. Survives, probably thanks to TV.
11/11/48 at 8 pm on WATV. I wonder how many Poverty Row epics would have survived if 16mm safety prints hadn't been struck for early TV, eventually falling into the hands of collectors. A 1935 Mascot, released just before studio was absorbed into Republic.
11/11/53 at 1 am on WCBS' "The Late Late Show.'' Here's a real novelty, independently-produced anti-Nazi drama with a once-important silent star and lots of stock footage. Opened in 1934 at a major movie palace on Broadway.
11/11/58 at 11 pm on WNEW's "Five Star Movie.'' 1938 Berkeley musical so feeble that Dick Powell and Bette Davis both turned it down contains an earworm that's burrowed into my brain for 40 years, cleverly staged on a budget. Watch:
11/11/63 at 9 am on WABC's "Movie of the Day.'' TCM audiences are very familiar with Powell and Blondell's work for WB, MGM, RKO and even Columbia. But how many have seen long-unavailable 1941 Universal comedy? BTW, YouTube upload is actually THE GREEKS HAD A WORD FOR THEM (1932)
US TV debut 11/11/63 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm on "NBC Monday Night at the Movies.'' IMDB claims that Charles Laughton and Walter Pidgeon, both prominent featured in recent doc SCOTTY AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF HOLLYWOOD, were both considered for Tracy's role in 1950 Minnelli classic.
11/11/68 at 9:30 pm on WOR's "Million Dollar Movie.'' Love to see a series on Pine-Thomas Productions, which started making Bs for Paramount in the '40s and then moved onto the lot in the '50s for bigger-budget programmers like 1953 carpetbagger opus shown on TV as THE VANQUISHED
11/11/73 from approximately 4 to 5 pm on WCBS' "Picture for a Sunday Afternoon.'' Arguably the most tolerable of Laurel and Hardy's six Fox features of the 1940s. Not only cut from 67 minutes but possibly joined in progress at the end of CBS' NFL telecast of Giants-Cowboys.
US TV debut 11/11/73 from 7:30 to 10:30 pm on "The ABC Sunday Night Movie.'' Anonymous IMDB contributor describes how, beyond panning and scanning, the multi-image scenes in 1970 blockbuster were adapted for TV showings. imdb.com/title/tt006537…
11/11/78 from 3 to 4:30 pm on WCBS' "Picture for a Saturday Afternoon.'' Universal split ownership of its Wanger productions with TV distributor Hygo, purchaser of producer's half-ownership. Hygo brought 1943 war drama to TV beginning in 1955, but the copyright expired in 1971.
11/11/83 on WLIW from 8 to 9:30 pm. Lapsed copyrights opened up all sorts of oddities for cable and PBS outlets like Channel 21 on Long Island. 1935 Anglo-American sci-fi, apparently never on US TV before PD, boasts impressive cast and special effects.
11/11/88 at 1:30 and 2:45 am "TNT Overnight.'' Two of the countless films churned out by Warners' B unit that I've never seen. More interested in 1938 McHugh comedy; the other one, from 1940, is remake of 1930 comedy with Winnie Lightner. None of them on DVD, @WarnerArchive.
11/11/93 at 2 am on WLIW. RKO laid off its entire NY staff, including the woman responsible for copyright renewal, just before a batch of studio's earliest releases approached 28-year deadlines. So at least 3 of comic team's films, never much seen on TV, entered the public domain
11/11/98 at 1:30 pm on TCM. 1945 hit made belated TV debut on NBC in 1968 thanks to rights issues. @BobbyRiversTV says Flora Robson (second left) is the only caucasian ever Oscar nominated for playing a person of color. Lost supporting actress to Anne Baxter (THE RAZOR'S EDGE).
