Many of the statistics cited in this article obscure the much more complicated and damaging reality. Ex. "average starting salary of $50k." Average obscures if you're on the low end, that monthly payment 0f $300 is 10% (or more) of salary. Big difference. nytimes.com/2018/11/18/opi…
The low default rate among graduates also obscures how many are making payments but struggling to do so or putting off things like having children or having homes because of debt. Default can have catastrophic consequences, so it's avoided at all costs, but costs are high.
A means tested program will be time-consuming to set up and implement and add costs and inefficiency. 90% of student debt is federally held. It could be wiped out with a single, cost-free stroke. Even if some so-called "undeserving" benefit, it's far better use of resources.
We need to disrupt the cycle of the growing ALICE (Asset-Limited, Income Constrained Employed) generation, and the best way is to forgive student loan debt while ensuring that cost isn't a barrier for future generations to pursue higher ed, particularly at public institutions.
It's likely that in today's world @DLeonhardt's family would have been an ALICE family, still saddled by debt, but also not qualifying for aid as @deandad outlines here. insidehighered.com/blogs/confessi…
Addressing costs and aid for college going forward doesn't help this lost generation. Limiting the forgiveness limits the effectiveness and even if some relatively well-off people benefit, those lower down will see a much greater benefit relative to their present status.
