1) Germany and Barnier do not support the last minute lobbying by EU countries eg France and Spain to harden #BREXIT conditions on the U.K. at this late stage
2) They warn a) it will make it even harder for the PM to get deal passed through Parliament b) they don’t want to reopen withdrawal agreement for anyone
3) France lobbying for fishing rights in U.K. waters and Spain digging heels in over Gibraltar - both issues of domestic concern in their respective countries - are a reminder of how politics in EU countries, not only EU law play in to the #Brexit negotiations
4) This will become even more apparent when detailed negotiations of the future EU-U.K. trade deal start in earnest AFTER #Brexit day

No10 says EU must decide if it will release a letter of assurances before the vote on Tuesday but EU sources tell me they are waiting for the go-ahead advice from Downing Street 1
The letter could have been released Saturday night ahead of No10 Sunday media blitz but wasn’t .. It could be released tonight or tomorrow ahead of vote .. OR EU/No10 may decide better not since 2
The EU letter will I’m told contain assurances/explanations of current deal and nothing new. The letter would come from Juncker/Tusk in Brussels and they can’t change the #Brexit deal without negotiation with and go ahead from 27 EU leaders 3

1) Pres Juncker just said on #Brexit "Don't force me to speculate, let me do what I can" (original in French: "laissez moi faire")
2) There’s talk of a Juncker/Tusk letter by Monday setting out EU reassurances on the backstop. This is not 100% confirmed
3) But Presidents Juncker and Tusk cannot unilaterally change the text or meaning of the #Brexit deal. It has been signed off by the 27 EU leaders and they need to be onboard and to agree to any changes

1) EU watching to see if their #Brexit deal negotiated with the PM is defeated in parliament tomorrow and if so, by how much
2) EU leaders will invite Theresa May to tell them what’s going on in the U.K, what her next steps will be and what she hopes for from them at their scheduled EU summit on Weds and Thursday this week #Brexit
3) EU v much wants to avoid a no-deal scenario but EU leaders unlikely to provide even written clarifications on controversial #Brexit issues like the backstop to help the PM unless they get a pretty cast iron guarantee that will get the deal through Parliament in a second vote

1. Today in #Brexit tedium: You all saw the Barnier tweet reiterating that a Canada+++ is available and has been from the beginning. The ultra brexiters have taken that to mean an FTA plus whatever fiction they want tacked on to it.
2. They are dishonestly claiming this as a vindication of their position, conveniently ignoring that the EU will not agree to begin talks on any such agreement unless the UK signs up to an NI backstop. The EU is entirely consistent on this.
3. The ultas claim that a Canada+++ deal where they get to define what the plusses mean means that we don't need a backstop, Two problems here. The EU won;t agree to it and secondly, the details of their proposal has the same basic flaw as Chequers which the EU already declined.

1) Thread - All Brexits are bad and what we voted for
It's often said by brexiters that "it's not all about economics"
However, the *actual* Leave campaign was almost wholly about economic arguments

With the leak of this 2-8% report those arguments are now trashed
2) We seem to have forgotten this however economics played a huge part in the Vote Leave campaign, making up over 2/3rds of the primary arguements. The clear message was we would at the least be no worse off and at best much better off. 4 of the 6 below state this clearly
3) & the fact is voters believed we would be no worse off. People prioritized immigration certainly, but against a backdrop of there being no consequences from Brexit - few are prepared to actually pay for ending FoM

A couple of noteworthy points:
/1
(1) As expected, Com demands that whole of EU acquis should continue to apply to the UK, incl. all four freedoms, Euroatom, justice and home affairs, even down to the current UK's opt out regime.

This crucially includes primacy of EU law and direct effect
(2) UK will no longer benefit from EU FTAs during transition. This is detrimental to UK economy, but also implies that it may strike its own FTAs during transition.
