1918 With the end of the war Americans had much to be thankful for and officials made an effort to broaden Thanksgiving. This @StateDept telegram was sent to diplomats in the capitals of the victorious power urging them to participate. 🦃 #ThanksgivingEve
“You may add that at this time, when there are such profound reasons for gratitude, the other victorious nations may consider it appropriate to designate Thursday..a national day of thanksgiving for the blessings bestowed upon us” #HappyThanksgiving
In response Greece made November 28th a national holiday to celebrate “deliverance from the yoke of foreign domination”
Brazil declared November 28th a day of thanksgiving and rejoicing and said “Brazil wishes to associate herself in this thanksgiving with the people of North America who both in time of peace and war have been her friends”
Great Britain didn’t have time to make arrangements for a general celebration but held a service at Saint Martin in the Fields (which just seems weird based on original Thanksgiving) but was a nice gesture.🤣
Los Angeles wrote President Roosevelt asking him to change Thanksgiving for shopping reasons and then Richman Brothers (in Ohio) got pissed off hearing (a small group) had requested the change. Apparently LA has always been arrogant😂
South Dakota and West Virginia were not having it either. SD reminded him there was more to America than Money and he wasn’t running Russia. WV for the win, asking to change all kinds of days🤣 #HappyThanksgiving
Florida chimed in saying everyday was Thanksgiving in their sunny state, then bragged a little. Can you not see @RonDeSantisFL sending the exact same memo? 😂❤️🦃
