Theresa May’s letter to the UK.I’m sorry to say I think it is full of falsehoods about the Brexit Deal, and what kind of future UK faces. I’m going to catalogue the fakeshiods in a thread.First, “we will take back control over our borders”. UK NEVER lost control over borders. 1
UK voluntarily chose to not apply restrictions on EU migrants over last 15 years. Those folks who did migrate to UK provided UK with a significant return on their presence within economy. They were an asset and not a burden. So there was never a need to “take back control” here. 2
It is also demonstrably false to suggest that “taking back control” over EU migration will benefit the UK economy. The impact of reduced inward migration is already being felt in many sectors. This will get worse and lead to chronic shortages of some professions/ occupations. 3
The second grotesque falsehood is that of the UK allegedly no longer being forced to “send vast sums to Brussels”. The UK sent very modest amounts to the EU over the years, less than 0.5% of GDP. This sum did not include the considerable (intangible) benefits of SM membership. 4
To make obvious comparison: UK spends about 0.7% of its GDP on foreign aid. Therefore it spends considerably less on EU membership than it does on international development. One of the mysteries of post 2010 Tory Govt: willingness to spend more on foreign aid than EU membership. 5
Mrs May also contends that the remit of the CJEU will end with the Brexit Agreement.
This is patently untrue. 6
Mrs May also contends (via careful wording) that EU Citizens are valued (laughable) and their rights will be protected (far from certain). Equally, the rights of UK Citizens living in EU states may well be placed in the bargaining table once we get to the meat of future talks. 7
Mrs May also suggests supply chains will be completely protected. That may hold true for the transition period but “frictionless trade” can only ensue via a successful negotiation of the future relationship. Such a negotiation will be many degrees more difficult than Article 50. 8
The idea that the Tory party has negotiated in good faith on behalf of all parts of the UK is not just false. It is laughable. Just ask the SNP administration in Scotland. Or those parties who represent the 56% of folks in Northern Ireland who voted Remain. 9
Mrs May speaks glowingly of a “better future” outside the EU, opening up new markets in the emerging world of Unicorn Economics, regions geographically distant from UK but really close “in our dreams”. 10
Last, but not least, 29 March 2019 as “a moment of renewal and reconciliation”.
Gimme a break. 11
