It’s taking some people a long time to understand & come to terms with the fact that there is no middle ground or compromise with the EU. It always has been Leave or Remain.
That’s why the UK-EU relationship was in tension, that why the topic is contentious, that’s why we had a referendum. That is why the only reasonable interpretation of the Leave vote is that people voted for no deal.
As a Judge might say ‘Leave is to be given an interpretation in accordance with its ordinary meaning: to be separate from, to withdraw, to exit, to decamp, to vacate, to depart”
It is hard to interpret any of the following things as consistent with that - ongoing customs union, single market, EEA/EFTA, paying money, asking permission, rule-taking, freedom of movement and so forth.
The establishment can put off this decision until another year or another decade, but it simply consigns us to distraction, contention and division until a decision is made one way or the other. We either Leave or Remain.
