12/1/48 at 8 pm on WATV. 1936 Poverty Row epic from E.R. Burroughs, listed in NY Times as starring "Joan Hall.'' Originally billed under his birth name and under Burke, Paramount's erstwhile "Panther Woman'' from ISLAND OF LOST SOULS, more recently in LIVES OF A BENGAL LANCER.
NY TV debut 12/1/53 at 11:15 pm on WCBS' "The Late Show.'' Terence Fisher's Anglo-American co-production, a wild noir with Scott in a dual role, had been run through US theaters by Lippert Pictures the previous year.
12/1/53: New York City papers were shut down by an engravers union strike, so I consulted listings from Long Island's Newsday, online at ProQuest Historic newspaper. All the feature films on NYC's 7 stations on that date.
NY TV debuts 12/1/58 at 5:30 pm on WCBS' "The Early Show'' and 11:15 pm on "The Late Show.'' Channel 2 sometimes promoted less than top-of-the-line films in ads. Un-touted 1933 Hawks epic w/ bigger stars, from 1 to 3:15 pm on "The Late Late Show,'' also appears to be a premiere.
12/1/63 from 8:30 to 10 on NBC. Not bad as I recall, forgotten DeMille tribute drawing mostly on Paramount and MCA owned clips. Produced by MGM TV, which touted it in a full-page ad in NY Times featuring caricatures of their own current TV and past movie stars.
NY TV debut 12/1/68 at 7 pm on WOR's "Big Preview.'' Dennis Hopper and Johnny Cash are also featured in Phil Karlson's MGM-distributed 1960 noir, which inevitably turned up five years later on "The CBS Late Movie.''
12/1/73 at 6 pm on WNEW. Zanuck reportedly found Gerd Oswald's 1956 adaptation of Ira Levin's novel about a psychopathic murderer so distasteful that he sold the project to United Artists, complete with Fox contract players. NY TV 10/19/62 on WABC's "Best of Broadway.''
12/1/78 on WOR's "4 O'Clock Movie.'' Huge number of Screen Gems-distributed titles from Columbia and Universal migrated to Channel 9 after their initial runs on WCBS. Capra's 1934 Oscar winner launched limited-commercial "Schaefer Award Theatre'' on WCBS 5/23/59.
12/1/83 on WOR's "4 O'Clock Movie.'' Cut to 62 minutes, retitled 1942 PRC horror import (reissued as MOONLIGHT MADNESS) made NY TV debut 2/2/47 on WNBT. By 4/8/49 on WCBS, it was broadcast under original UK title THE NIGHT HAS EYES. Public domain in the US by 1970.
12/1/88 from midnight to 2:20 am on WABC's "The Channel 7 Late Movie.'' Dieterle and Muni's 1937 Oscar winner was one of a few WB pre-1948 that got mixed in with a plethora of made-for-TV movies filling early morning hours.
12/1/93 from 1:45 to 3:45 am on "TNT Overnight.'' Columbia sure didn't spare adjectives in ad for maiden effort (1943) in three-strip Technicolor. First collaboration between Scott and future partner Brown, with Budd Boetticher as assistant to director Charles Vidor.
12/1/98 at 10 pm on WTBS. TNT had begun its 24-hour Christmas Eve marathons of 1983 classic the year before. Narrated and co-written by the legendary Jean Shepherd, who told me he HATED the title. nypost.com/2013/11/29/cur…
12/1/98 at 11 pm on TCM. I described bittersweet 1979 comedy as Allen's masterpiece in print for decades. Now I can't even bring myself to watch it anymore. Robert Osborne also introduced BANANAS, LOVE AND DEATH and STARDUST MEMORIES that evening 20 years ago.
