The customers to whom corporate insurance companies must answer are not patients, and they grow profits by denying claims.

I don’t think the government could do a more efficient job of denying healthcare claims, though, so 🧔🏻👍🏻

Perhaps AOC's great contribution is to show just how possible it is to change the conversation, and thereby shine a light on how Democrats inability to do so for so many years in many case represents an unwillingness to do so.
AOC doesn't have some sort of super-powers. She's just got principals.

Nothing against her—she's very talented—but I think what she's doing is easily replicable just by standing for something real and working for it, and refusing to back down from it or accept bad framing.
Doing these simple things are politically powerful tools that should be used all the time.

Refusing to back down is as valid and effective a tool as compromise.

Idealism is just as valid and import as pragmatism.

They should be employed every time they're appropriate.

Donald Trump is an open white supremacist. If anyone treats calling him racist as even mildly controversial I cannot take them seriously.
I mean, for example: everything.
When Anderson Cooper plays the skepticism game in reaction to AOC’s straightforward acknowledgement of a clearly observable truth, he isn’t taking an unbiased position.

In fact he’s taking the position that Trump’s whole charade depends on.

If the richest among us find marginal taxes of 70% radical, wait until they hear what the alternatives are.
It’s an indication of how successful the radical oligarchist movement has been at reframing the public discourse, that something as common-sense as a 70% marginal rate for the highest brackets is considered a radical outlier.
Radical oligarchists have so taken over public discourse that people whose entire ethos and mission is consolidating over half the world's wealth in the hands of a few thousand call themselves "conservative" and nobody says anything.

I confess I’m a little confused by the Republican strategy on health care, which is to end protections for people with pre-existing conditions, while lying and saying they’re doing the opposite. I realize blatant lying is the GOP way in the Trump era, but this seems a stretch.
After all, voters are going to notice when they lose their health coverage for pre-existing conditions. And unlike all the lies about everything from Kavanaugh’s past to Trump’s criminality, this is going to be something voters feel affects them.
And the lying is *blatant*. Multiple GOP candidates are claiming to support coverage for pre-existing conditions, but are backing a lawsuit that is blatantly trying to end that. vox.com/policy-and-pol…

Explaining this to people who don’t remember insurance before ACA is difficult. A young man last night asked me why he would buy a bus ticket if the bus company didn’t have to have busses. 1/
My explanation: insurance before the ACA was designed for the needs of insurance companies. The principal design was how to protect their profits.

The principal change of the ACA was to reverse it— to protect consumers w standard benefits, no lifetime caps & pre-ex. 2/
