1/ Key concept when thinking abt curation businesses: Brands & Bridges:

A brand confers most of its benefits as soon as you get accepted.

A bridge confers most of its benefits upon completion of a successful tour of duty.

[Reminder: Curation businesses ]
2/ Being, say, X’s chief of staff is a bridge because, if you do a great job, X will open doors for you.

If you quit early, you won’t see the benefits.

In fact you’ll be worse off since your reference-ability is concentrated so highly in one person, X.

X = awesome person.
3/ Conversely, you could fail at Harvard, + it’s still impressive you were accepted in the 1st place!

You jumped through hoops that signal intelligence & industriousness—when motivated.

They'll forgive + ask: “But will they be motivated?”

(Harvard can of course be a bridge...)
4/ If you run a training program and want to retain great people, make sure it’s a bridge and not only a brand.

If you’re joining something that’s a good brand, make sure it’s also a bridge.
