The vote is called! Senate votes to end US involvement in the war in Yemen!
Kudos to my colleague @iramfali, allies like those at at @WinWithoutWar, and to senators including @ChrisMurphyCT and @SenSanders who've worked so hard for so long for this moment. Fight will continue after new Congress is sworn in. This is historic.
How this works:
- under War Powers Act, if House & Senate both pass a concurrent resolution, it has force of law even w/o POTUS signature
- due to Paul Ryan chicanery last night (w assist from a few Dems), House won't pass it now
- but Pelosi is coming

He’s also a profoundly decent, kind, & excellent human being.

Stu has been doing health policy in the Senate. He worked with my wife, so I got to know him personally as well as professionally. He’s got a kind of radiant affability, combined with a razor-sharp mind and unshakable principles.
He’s the kind of guy who would come over for dinner, read to your kids before bedtime (at their insistence), and then fix your ceiling fan—all while brainstorming brilliant strategies to expand access to rural health care & curb the opioid crisis. We wouldn’t want him to leave.

Here’s the reality: this shutdown could end with Trump cracking—or with McConnell simply overriding a Trump veto and re-passing the spending bill that previously sailed unanimously through the Senate and, in the next Congress, just passed the House.

The conventional wisdom is that voters have short memories and that damage from shutdowns fades fast. But that won’t apply if this lasts for months. Nobody forgot health care repeal. This shutdown will cause more & more real pain. And the public knows who’s inflicting it on them.

-Word "condemns" only used against Iran & Houthis, not Saudis
-Warns agnst buying Russian or Chinese weapons
-"indiscriminate" "human rights abuses" apply to Houthis not Saudis who are called out for "concerning behavior"

2/ The Senate resolution title "Supporting a Diplomatic Solution in Yemen and Condemning the Murder of Jamal Khashoggi" but as far as I can see, doesn't "condemn" any individual for it
3/ Only mention of curtailing US support for Saudi coalition in Yemen is declaration of no statutory auth for US "involvement in hostilities in the Yemen civil war" (not the counterterrorism ops) and "supports" ending "air-to-air refueling" (I believe KSA now has that capability)

Immediately after Jamal shared my column, i was inundated with one of the worst and most coordinated attacks by #Saudi regime trolls I have ever experienced. For days. It was a window into how much shit he and other Saudis who are critical got and continue to get.

Our own U.S. government has supplied bombs, cluster bombs, jet fuel, and intelligence to Saudi Arabia in its war.

When Saudi jets fly to Yemen to drop their bombs -- THEY GET REFUELED ON THE WAY BY THE U.S. AIR FORCE.
