Today's Sunday papers on Brexit reflect chaos and confusion on all sides. I think we need to understand how we got here, to find a way out, and that is that all sides have been somewhat less than honest. Leaving far too many people confused...
Start with the PM, who has been trying to paint her deal as something it is not, about the future relationship which is far from confirmed, and saying the backstop will probably not be needed, against all evidence of the speed of negotiating such things 2/
Then the no-deal Brexiteers, who are desperately trying to invent WTO rules or agreements for some reason the EU will reach ("managed no deal") to pretend there won't be an economic cost to what is after all a political decision 3/
The referendum campaigners who are trying to pretend that there is no legitimacy problem with having another vote, and sometimes even going back to the old 'vote to stay in a reformed EU' nonsense 4/
Even the EEA campaigners saying we'll still have a proper say in EU regulations, though I'd say that largely this is the side who have been least misleading. Possibly, and sadly for fans of sane politics, this may also be why this option has little traction 5/
Nearly forgot Labour, and let's face it, that's easily done on Brexit, we're not going to hear that their honest position is they don't have one, they just hope the whole thing will go away and Corbyn will not get blames for anything 6/
The issues around Brexit are unsolvable without honesty, difficult enough with it. There is no perfect political and economic solution, and sooner or later the wider public will have to be told this. Until that happens, the crisis will continue 7/ end
