a friend sent me this gif and it made me lmfao. "this shit sounds 110% like honeycomb propaganda" #thetruthisoutthere #sheeple #artisanalhandcraftedpackets4u
in all seriousness tho. I'm gonna try and say something real here, without it coming across like a pompous arse:

most of this "honeycomb propaganda" is an peek 1-5 years into the future for those of you who write code that runs in prod.

use us or no, you should know this.
I have always loved being on the bleeding edge of tech. I'm not the greatest engineer in the world, but I get *so* much energy from solving problems that nobody else has yet.. in production.

(whee)
These days I get nightmares, literal nightmares, about falling behind. I wonder how long my knowledge will be fresh for.

I've never run k8s, service meshes, a long long list of shit for real. It stresses me out, and eventually I will have to go back to hands on. I just will.
But that's why I can guaran fucking tee you that all of the technical decisions that underpin honeycomb, are the decisions everyone is struggling to migrate to or build afresh.

Almost all teams, even the very best teams, have a long long way to go to catch up. Years, mostly.
And that's just tech. Using honeycomb makes so many human processes like collaboration and inspecting running code in production feel like *magic*. Like obvious. Like you aren't fighting your tools to DTRT for once.

Our customers tell us this, over and over and over.
I used to be really sensitive about being called a shill, or like I was doing marketing. This propaganda nugget would have gotten to me.

Then I realized that most of the good engineers see coming exactly what we do. The haters do not tend to be people I admire, let's say that.
Oh and I didn't design this shit out of my own brilliance. Search for the Facebook scuba white paper. I was just lucky enough to run a large platform and experience switching from time series monitoring to that shit.

Got my mind blown.
I thought it would take the big players 5+ years to converge on these ideas, but if you look at what they are doing with acquisitions and marketing and development, you can see them trying to close the gap much faster. Just as of the last year or two.
Anyway... we won't be of the future forever, and I'll be the first to admit when the world has caught up. Til then, you could do worse than to give us a shot. Get a jump on things. The future is fun. ☺️
