In the past, the move on shit like this has been to privately email a project creator and ask they produce proof they can do what their campaign claims they can. They're given a deadline to do that. If they miss it, plug gets pulled.

Not the same thing, but that's what went down with Skarp "laser razor," the "Kobe Beef Jerky" Kickstarter, and that one GoFundMe to "buy the private browsing data of every Congressperson." Although I'm pretty sure that last one was a statement more than anything.
And yeah, not saying GFM is absolutely doing this as we speak, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were.
(...and if I'm gonna be real, the only platform that's been REALLY BAD about this has been IndieGogo, who were warned repeatedly stuff like Triton Gills and tricorder-level "food scanners" were literally impossible, and still let them fund.)
