Quick thread: No one is making these advertisers leave this show. The decision is theirs. They have had meetings and decided that, to appeal to the most consumers they can, it is probably foolish to continue to support a show that denigrates many of them.…
At the same time, Fox is making its own decision. They have opted to continue the divisive, bigoted rhetoric with zero regard for the consequences. By tripling down on these comments, they have basically told their customers (advertisers) that they don’t care about their brands.
No one is making anyone do anything here. These are all calculated decisions. The free market decides which ideas work and which don’t.
As someone who’s spent a lot of advertisers, it has always been clear that they want to steer clear of controversy, even rewording copy on commercials to avoid being misconstrued. Being on a show that calls immigrants - or anyone - dirty is a tremendous risk.
Most of these companies have Diversity and Inclusion departments and pages on their websites. To support a show that has openly questioned (repeatedly) the idea that diversity is good for our country just isn’t in line with that. It’s reads as hypocritical to sponsor it.
So Fox can blame anyone they want that they’re losing advertisers on this show, but ultimately, they must point the finger directly back at themselves. They don’t have to air this rhetoric, but they’ve made the choice to do it, just as advertisers have by not supporting it.
*time with advertisers. Shit.
