even if the Parkland kids did literally nothing else for the social good, they've managed to shift focus onto victims of gun violence instead of the killer
nearly every other mass murder has resulted in a cult of personality around a killer. the exceptions are ones where the families or communities take the mic themselves
what people are allowed by the press to do that is a function of privilege-- it's much harder for marginalized groups to do it
but effectively what people mean when they say that the Parkland kids shouldn't have a voice is that they think the focus should be on the murderer and his beliefs and his narrative
they've done a really good job of keeping the Elliot Rodgers thing where it becomes clear that the way to get a bunch of people to read your manifesto is to murder a bunch of people from happening. they took a lot of that power away from the person who killed their classmates
they shouldn't have to do that. but they did a great job of it. and they've taken a lot of shit for it.
