1. Counterpoint: AnonymousQ1776 gave Twitter the what-for today. They did not "get owned," because you can't harm the reputation of a rando anonymous Twitter feed. But they did accomplish 2 things: a) they acquired 2000 new followers in 24 hrs & b) they created a distraction.
2. First of all, and I really do hate to say this, but Ben Shapiro is right...there simply were not any conservatives of note (who tweet under their own name) who made fun of AOC dancing. Almost no, actual, existing conservatives thought this video "owned the libs."
3. But what we perhaps didn't notice as much today was that Ben, and many other conservative pundits, were glorying in the fact that Trump tweeted out a racist meme created by Shapiro's compatriots at the Daily Wire. Trump's tweet got 20X more rt's than the AOC dancing video.
4. So what happened today is that a bunch of liberals (like myself) got distracted by a sh*tposting, anonymous Q conspiracy theorist while most conservatives (who we thought had been owned) either thought the video was cute or didn't mention it, cause they were busy being racist.
5. Here's what matters. Anonymous won the internet today because they got a bunch of people to believe the "alternative fact" that conservatives were triggered by AOC's dancing. That misdirected, liberal derision fueled a viral sensation which earned Anon 2000 new followers.
6. Anon's post was not made in earnest with the intent to persuade, it was a sh*tpost designed to go viral. I mean, come on, the post they supposedly got "owned" for is the post they chose to pin. Anon76 is not humiliated this evening, they are thrilled.
7. It's also worth noting that the viral video from Anon76 is edited down from this original. The watermark on the edit says "LiveLeak" which is a longstanding far right media outlet in the UK. This does not look to be the work of an American amateur.
8. Take a look at the Anon76 account. It's a steaming pile of far right hot garbage, mostly retweets. But thanks to that video of AOC that liberals helped go viral, that garbage account got amplified. It has the attention of 2000 more followers today than it did yesterday. ✅
9. It's a small victory, 2000 additional followers. It's not a victory that will massively change the world. All the same, Anon76 won Twitter today by playing upon our desire to see "conservatives do stupid things to own the libs & then get owned." But who really got owned today?
10. UPDATE: While I was writing up that thread, Anonymous76 deleted their account. It's all very strange. I have no idea what to make of it. But I do think it confirms my hunch about what this video was NOT. It was not the work of some lonely, triggered conservative American.
11. The whole thing kind of reminds me of Trumpy Bear. My guess is that the makers of this ad tried to create something that would a) appeal to a segment of excessively irony-free Fox viewers AND b) go viral as something liberals made fun of.
12. So when liberals make fun of Trumpy Bear, they're kind of missing the point. The more we laughed at "how stupid those conservatives with their Trumpy Bears are," the more the market for Trumpy Bear grew, even among liberals (who would buy it as a joke).
13. But in the end, the Trumpy Bear people got paid...and that's what it was all about in the first place.
