(1/n) THREAD: Signal sessions part xyz! Thanks to @ea4gpz and @coastal8049 for nice articles about and around @cgbassa's software! So much to learn about orbital mechanics. But while I'm getting very decent results on LEO satellites, there's a mystery hanging over the equator!
(2/n) I was curious could I see the Alphasat wobble via Doppler shift. I randomly selected a peak/carrier at 1538.029 MHz. Because of a patch antenna I really not idea where's the signal is coming from. Anything from 24E to 70E...
(3/n) I left the #strf (rffft) to capture a very narrow bandwidth (like 1000 Hz) to save disk space for four days! So, there was a carrier, flatlining solidly. But then there was this slow sinusoidal signal, just what I've seen on @ea4gpz's Es'hail tweets!
(4/n) After having some problems with PGPLOT GUI views on my first installation of #sattools I re-installed it to a virtual machine, while old setup is doing the capture work. Following the aforementioned articles I tried to identify the source
(5/n) Having a very limited knowledge about orbital mechanics didn't help. With bit of hit-and-miss and an hour processing 24.000 data points from out.dat (mistake) the software narrowed down to 30 satellites. The problem is...
(6/n) ...that some of these recognized satellites are actually dead rocket bodies. And some are satellites that are at least some point below horizon (signal I saw was continuous). But could it be from further out??
(7/n) The signal over four days has visually some wobbliness! Could it be from the graveyard orbit?? One of the #strf hits was Intelsat 601. It's not on stationary figure-eight orbit, but slowly drifting to west. Could I have seen a dead, old decommissioned satellite??
(8/n) Websites and @uhf_satcom's great frequency list does not mention any frequencies on dead satellites nor Intelsats etc. So, at least for now this wobbly wanderer stays a mystery for me! Any ideas Internet? Datafiles are available on request! (/THREAD)
