If Parliament and the establishment doesn’t get its act together and start better reflecting the result of the referendum, a significant section of the 17.4 million are likely to look to all sorts of ways for the system to be reformed and overhauled.
Some of that will be positive and benign. However, there is a significant risk that other causes will be unwelcome, unhealthy and negatively disruptive. Parliament cannot ride roughshod over manifesto promises and a clear message that was delivered by an enormous vote.
How do people think the Trumps of the world get elected. Not because he radiates competence, but because it is a desperate desire to send a message and that ‘something has to be done to make the establishment listen’.
And guess what, the majority of people who voted Remain recognise this. They instinctively feel the danger in fudging and manipulating to put to one side the desire by the majority of the people to break ties with the EU.
Our Parliamentary democracy has been respected and emulated all over the world. Are MPs really prepared to risk its venerated reputation for the sake of keeping us wedded to a supra-national organisation which most objective analysists recognise is deeply flawed.
The behaviour of those who temporarily inhabit Parliament are putting into jeopardy the success of our unwritten constitution by failing to respect where the ‘boundaries’ lie and manipulating its flexibility.
