10 years on from launching climate science denial campaign group @thegwpfcom, Nigel Lawson is stepping down as its Chair. Seems like a good moment to revisit some of his greatest hits... 🗒🔍

There was that time Ofcom upheld a complaint from none other than Brian Cox after Lawson said "average world temperature has slightly declined". This was a lie ❌

Heading back a bit further, let's remember the time he launched the GWPF by claiming it was "morally wrong" to encourage developing nations to cut carbon emissions (h/t @LeoHickman)

('Cos, you know, letting small nations drown and/or die of smog and heatwaves is totally cool).
Oh, and there was that time he appeared on a show called 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' in 2007. A show that received over 265 complaints for its inaccuracy 🙌

Lawson is succeeded by Lord Bernard Donoughue who - let's be frank - is another cranky old white guy who for some reason can't get on board with climate science 🌍🌡

I and many others (@DesmogUK @DrSimEvans @RobinWebs @LeoHickman @CarbonBrief @UE @ret_ward @EcoMontague @kylamandel @dana1981 @readfearn @RozPidcock @rtmcswee @Spinwatch to name but a few) have spent 100s of hours checking Lawson's nonsense 👀 Probably not for the last time.
But it's notable that is Lawson's legacy - handing the baton from one slightly crazed, increasingly fringe, universally derided has-been to another 🤸‍♀️🤸‍♂️

The GWPF will keep doing what they do. And will ultimately slide off into a sunset of glorious irrelevance, just like Nigel 👋

The article was quickly picked up by far-right commentator James Delingpole for @BreitbartNews, who rejoiced not because it showed some ethical failing, but because he hates windfarms.

A bunch of newspapers and media outlets have today splashed that the #Gatwick disruption could be the fault of an "eco warrior".

First, to give benefit of the doubt, the police have said "one line of enquiry" is that this is the work of someone involved in environmental activism. The police have also said it is one of "several lines of enquiry".

Fine, report those two bits of information.
But DON'T put as your headline splash that "eco-warriors" or "environmental protestors" are at fault/suspected of/have been blamed for this, as @thetimes @Telegraph and @TheSun all have.

As I replied to @EricHolthaus- I'm aware of and inspired by @givingwhatwecan & @GiveWell work on global health/poverty; I personally want to support climate mitigation. I realize there's no one right answer, depends on theory of change etc; curious to hear different perspectives.
Esp. in climate arena where impact could be on different possible levels (eg X tons avoided from cookstoves vs Y tons #fossil CO2 kept in the ground vs systemic political or economic change)- curious to hear diverse range of theory of change or evidence of effectiveness.

"The climate has always changed."

You must immediately say "No, we understand all observed warming is now human caused, overwhelming any natural changes."

You're confusing "weather" and "climate." The world as a whole is warming. One cold day in one place doesn't disprove global climate science.

Scientists are once again warning about #climate armageddon. Thousands vetted the best science out there. More extinction, death and disease is in store if we don't act fast.

But I think we should focus on something uncomfortable: for many people, this is meaningless. /1
Let’s be clear: the IPCC report is a tour de force. Over 90 scientists spent years writing it, based on over 6,000 peer reviews. It says the planetary warming ALREADY caused “will persist for centuries to millennia.” It says we’re not acting fast enough to cut pollution. /2
The report adds to the vast global scientific consensus, based on an overwhelming body of evidence, that we’re pushing the planet into DANGEROUS and destructive warming conditions, by burning fossil fuels at industrial scales, and dumping carbon pollution into the air. /3
