Hi, @GTS_Watch

You are challenging a “fact” I asserted (that “Manafort told Gates”) and you ask if I have evidence to back it up.

I took this “fact” out of a document Mueller filed with the courts.
I don't have the evidence. Mueller does.
2/ It came from here:

Federal prosecutors don't assert facts unless they believe they have evidence to prove that fact in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

They also have a high conviction rate. (If you google you get from 92% to 97% in the US)
3/ I spent my legal career as a defense lawyer. I have learned to take seriously any “facts” or “allegations” put forward by a federal prosecutor.

There is actually a lot we can each do. If everyone does something small, it makes a difference. Timothy Snyder has a list somewhere. Off the top of my head: If you can afford it, subscribe to publications that do good investigative journalism. If you can't, show support . . .
. . . by retweeting and liking investigative journalist. They risk their lives to uncover truth. (The ones out there digging up evidence and breaking stories).
Donate to causes. People really are stepping up . . .
. .last summer I volunteered at a detention center to give legal assistance to asylum seekers. I offered to go back this winter, but they had so many volunteers they didn't need me in that particular center. Donations also poured in.

It's not too early to organize for 2020.

1/ Another part of Patrick's question was whether Trump will do time. I also see people asking about whether members of Congress who have been shielding Trump have also committed crimes. There is even anticipation of mass indictments and arrests.
2/ Knowingly shielding someone who has committed crimes can itself be a crime, depending on the circumstances.

Parsing it out will require a lengthy thread, so let's assume for the sake of argument, that some of the shielding has been criminal.
3/ There are serious problem with bringing "all" the perpetrators to justice. Among other things it would (probably) not be wise.

Recall the concept of prosecutorial discretion. For a variety of reasons, not all crimes committed are brought to trial.

Hi, Patrick. I think that, the end, the only real way to save liberal democracy is through public opinion and elections.

It’s easier to write about how we got into this mess than to chart pathways out. (A crystal ball would be helpful)
1/ By “this mess” I mean finding ourselves on the verge of a fascist takeover.

In the past I warned against impeachment because the process works like this: The House investigates. If the House finds evidence, it impeaches. Impeachment requires a simple majority . . .
2/ The Senate then holds a trial on whether to remove from office. 2/3 of the Senate is required for removal.

The process is analogous to an investigation leading to an indictment, followed by trial.

It's clear the McConnell-led Senate won't remove, regardless of the evidence.

SPCs #Manafort filing is heavily redacted as expected. What he said, about whom etc. Will post doc in full shortly.
To note, the filing starts with a declaration by FBI Special Agent Jeffrey Weiland who participated in a dozen proffer sessions with Manafort.
The information around what was discussed is redacted, clearly. But at the core here, SPC contends Gates told investigators Manafort told him in Jan '17 to go ahead and use "intermediaries" in order to help folks land a spot in the Trump admin.
