/ So a lot of the cuts that are being announced are things that I and others (e.g. Don Drummond) have advocated for awhile. Don't waste grant $ on higher-income students, the access benefits of grants for 2nd entry programs, 5th year undergrads questionable.
/ To the extent that $ cut from those places is maintaining grants for lower-income students, that's good. Problem is, some low-income students are still being left worse off. That's bad. The fact that students from families over $170K are actually *better* off makes it worse.
/ It's hard to fully evaluate what's going on because gov't has only provided generalities - no details on actual size of cut either at aggregate level or for specific cases (though if you know the data, you can back-of-the-envelope some of it).
/ On basis of the evidence I have, my read is this is bad but not calamitous. That said, I understand the Minister may have freelanced a bit in the press conference and so what was said today may not line up 100% with what is going on behind the scenes.
/ The voluntary student unionism thing is big though. It will fundamentally reshape student life on Ontario campuses, mostly for the worse.
