1. 110million people die every year as a direct result of stress, this is 7 people every 2 seconds. This is to say that not less than 1050 people would have as a result of stress by the time you’re done reading this thread. #MindFit
2. What does anxiety, Panic attack, depression, coronary heart disease, High blood pressure and self destructive habits all have in common? They are all either caused by stress or aggravated by it and its funny how most people don’t consider themselves stressed at all. #MindFit
3. The problem is the fact that, as Nigerians, we have gotten used to stress and we can see the leaks in our habit control problems. The thing about stress is that when its gone, the response stays stuck in the body. #MindFit.
4. National institute of mental health defines stress as the brain’s response to any demand. Stress is simply a response. Not all stress is bad. This brings us to the issue of Work Related Stress- WRS. #MindFit
5. WRS occurs when the demands at work are beyond the worker’s capacity to cope with them. It is an organizational issue not an individual fault. #MindFit
6. Most of us are not aware of the fact that, excess stress in the workplace can put you at risk of job burnout- in which your physical and mental resources are depleted and you become physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted. #MindFit
7. A healthy job is likely to be one where the pressures on employees are appropriate in relation to their abilities and resources. A healthy working environment is one which there is not only an absence of harmful conditions but an abundance of health-promoting ones. #MindFit
8. Poor work design, interpersonal relationships, conflicting work roles, uncertain job expectations, lack of opportunity for growth, job insecurity, lack of participation and influence over the way the job is done. These are all causes of work related stress. #MindFit
9. Other causes can be classified into internal and external. Internal causes include: A wrong fit role, misalignment between company and personal values, working parenting guilt, Work/life imbalance, introvert/extrovert stress, financial struggles and feeling trapped. #MindFit
10. External causes are: Unreasonable demands from the management, unclear guidance at work, poor project practices, bullying at work, low morale or low engagement at work, and poor working conditions. #MindFit
11. How does stress affect an employee’s performance? As stress begins to be perceived as overwhelming or excessive, the person reaches a fatigue point wherein the performance levels starts to decline.#MindFit
12. The ultimate end of overwhelming stress, called burnout, can be exhaustion, ill-health or breakdown. #MindFit
13. How does Work related stress affect our mental health? Some mental health and human resources professionals think work can cause depression, others say an individual has to be vulnerable to it some way. #MindFit
14. DEPRESSION AS A RESULT OF LEARNED HELPLESSNESS. Learned helplessness is the sense that one has no control over their job- for fear of losing it, not having any power to make decisions, not having any control to make things better. #MindFit
15. Symptoms of depression that comes from learned helplessness include: Giving up – not trying to make a difference, social withdrawal, passivity, decreased effectiveness at work, decreased problem solving ability, procrastination, frustration, and low self esteem. #MindFit
16. Employees feel trapped when they are in a job that lacks growth and is fostering complacency, there is a sense of lack of worth. #MindFit
17. What individuals can do to reduce job stress. While a certain amount of stress can be motivating, too much stress can lead to difficulty concentrating, frustration, and poor decision making and a number of stress-related illnesses. #MindFit
18. One can reduce stress through prioritizing and planning, breaking bad thinking habits, and recognizing what causes you stress. #MindFit
