Dr. Cawcutt @KellyCawcuttMD is about to deliver 🔥🔥🔥🔥 on applications of social media in healthcare @unmc #hcsmgr
What is social media? A technology for sharing information. You can LEARN on social media!
Approximately 80% of US population are on social media. In the grand grounds room, majority of hands went up for having a social media account, but significant drop off for those using it professionally. #HCSMGR
Why should we care about social media in medicine? #FakeNews amplifies misinformation. “We in the healthcare community need to meet our patients where they are and give them the right information.” -Dr. @KellyCawcuttMD
Dr. @KellyCawcuttMD shares our @UNMC_ID social media journey along with @DrJRMarcelin, after launching in conjunction with IDWEEK2017

As of today we have had over 235 blog posts, over 30k blog views, and consistent twitter growth.

We are amplifying science and expertise.
Other institutions are recognizing the impact. Social media is here to stay, whether or not you like it or use it. Time to engage with the future. #HCSMGR
The journals are recognizing this too. Recall this recent publication in @NEJM written by @SashaShillcutt & @JulieSilverMD
nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… #HCSMGR
How to use social media?
Consume
Develop
Disseminate
Recognition

#HCSMGR
Who is on social media? Who is posting the content you trust? The societies where we have membership and the journals we read. An ocean of 2.5 million peer reviewed articles published annually. How can we possibly read them all? #HCSMGR
What’s wrong with this picture? With limited time, how do you keep up with all the journals delivered to your home or office? @KellyCawcuttMD reads more on social media than paper journals these days, and many would agree #HCSMGR
Hi there @ASP_Chat were we not discussing this last night? Social media in #antimicrobialstewardship #HCSMGR
Dr. @KellyCawcuttMD says if you don’t share your work no one will know you are filling a gap in science. @UNMCCOM department of medicine published 400 papers in 2017. How do you get to “prominence” for promotion if no one knows you published? #HCSMGR
What is implementation science? You can’t implement what you don’t know. The first step is to disseminate the research.
How do you measure dissemination of research? The answer is bibliometrics. Bibliometrics is to scientific papers as epidemiology is to patients. Critically important but evolving in relevance of HOW it is measured #HCSMGR
Altmetrics assess impact and dissemination of research in real-time. Where is your research being shared? WHO is talking about your research? #HCSMGR
Can a social media strategy change engagement? @PMRJournal is great example where an intentional strategy increased engagement. This strategy could be applied to individual articles to increase altmetrics also. #HCSMGR
But can tweets predict citations? YES! Twitter can provide an 11x increase in citations of the articles. Journals that are active on social media have a 30% increased citation rate than those without social media engagement #HCSMGR
Social media can change your career. More academic departments and societies need to recognize that social media simply represents a different kind of scholarship than traditional methods. #HCSMGR
