It's utter stupidity to talk about religion in the same sentence as science. Any attempt to compare both is futile. Religion is an ideology and codified ethics. People have fared well without it. On the other hand, science is integral to our lives. There's no future without it.
It is a direct insult to science when someone calls it a replacement to religion. It is not. Religion doesn't matter to science. Replacement of religion is simply not having religion.
Not having a religion doesn't mean "not capable of introspecting, pondering about universe, existential questions etc". It simply means that the conclusions to all "spiritual" questions don't align with that of religions.
It also doesn't mean they are "immoral people who doesn't have any fears". They simply pick up the ideas of justice, compassion, equality etc from elsewhere, and not from religion. The argument that mankind cannot survive w/o religion is bogus because it's been proved otherwise.
Another important point of confusion seem to be about the distinction b/w theism and religion. There could atheists who are religious, who follow traditions, and who celebrate religious holidays. There is nothing shameful or surprising in any of these.
People need to be able to reject the binary of atheists vs religious people because it's not valid. There are religions in the world which were atheistic in nature, like Samkhya, Mimamsa, Carvaka, Buddhism etc.
Atheists don't hate religion. As any reasonable people, they understand the impacts of religion on people - both postive and negative. More importantly, atheism isn't an ideology one can base their politics on. It's dangerous when atheists try to do that.
