Brexit looks ever more like a revolution against the values of the Enlightenment, Michael Gove was right. And the world is watching us in disbelief.
What really worries me is this. Does anyone believe there is a line Theresa May would not cross to get Brexit? Does anyone believe she would rather revoke Article 50 than deliver the disaster that is No Deal? Where does a country that does its politics like that end up?
This battle between the Enlightenment and Faith; between Means and Ends; between functioning democracy and the 'will of the people', leads us as a country to dark, almost unimaginable places.

Anxious to limit the political fallout from Jeremy Corbyn ignoring the wishes of members at Party Conference Labour has unleashed its attack dogs on Sarah Wollaston. But this is a perfectly fair observation.
We can't *know* a PV amendment would pass if Corbyn whipped in favour of it. But we also can't *know* it would fail.

Some loyalists are likely to have said they would resign shadow cabinet posts to give Corbyn cover to ignore members. And if he changed his mind so would they.
But three things are true.

One, Corbyn chose to make no attempt to coalesce support around any serious alternative to Theresa May's Brexit.

Two, he chose not to gather support for PV.

And, three, it is those choices which leave Theresa May's Brexit as the only game in town.

If the Government's withdrawal agreement hasn't been approved we're unlikely to have an agreed plan for the way forward. If we don't have an agreed plan for the way forward, why would the EU agree an extension of time? Does this meek Bill serve any real purpose?
Having 'Leave with no deal' as the default if we can't agree a deal is (since the Wightman case) a political choice. There is a different default Parliament can choose, namely, 'Revoke Article 50.' But that's the only alternative default on offer.
Labour's amendment seems* - although it is too shy to say so explicitly - to oblige the Govt immediately to ask the EU for more time. How else might Parliament get to vote on a completely renegotiated Withdrawal Agreement that prevents no deal?

(*Either that or it's a nonsense.)

Some misunderstandings here. What's proposed is (1) MPs may, by a majority, change the normal way the Commons operates (2) enabling a cross-party group of MPs (300+) rather than the Govt to choose what MPs do on a future day (3) on that future day MPs would still need a majority.
These are unusual times. Ordinarily the Govt has a majority of the Commons on all its business. This Govt has the confidence of the Commons - so it's the Govt - but has no majority on Brexit. So you need a new rule to enable a majority of the Commons to boss the Govt on Brexit.
Describing the change as a "constitutional coup" is no substitute for analysis of what it does. The Ground Zero of our constitution is Parliamentary Sovereignty. This change protects Ground Zero by stopping Govt thwarting Parliament on Brexit. Without it our constitution is gone

The options for #Brexit are still:
- May's deal as is
- No deal
- Remain
That's it, and whenever there is a focus on that Remain clearly comes out as the better option

But we don't focus on that because too many powerful groups want to pretend there's a unicorn 4th way
2) The hard brexiters want to pretend no deal is not really no deal but a "managed no deal" which will somehow force the EU27 into a "better" deal

Corbyn's front bench want to pretend there's a Labour "better" deal following new negotiations
3) the May government is about to support an ammendment to strike out the backstop, which everyone knows is simply not going to happen

And with respect to the Norway + supporters, whilst Remainers would accept this, it's not actually on the table as a confirmed option

A constant refrain from my fellow remainers is name be a #Brexit benefit many devote immense energy writing detailed explanations of trade tarrifs or how the EU works. I am grateful to them as I have learned a lot from them yet we all wonder why it makes so little difference
It seems to me that a better question to leavers is what are you getting out of #Brexit why do you support it in the face of so much evidence that its a terrible idea and I would like to suggest the answer lies in the realms of feeling
We have all seen that #Brexit licenses all kinds of opinions that 1l0 years ago would have been unacceptable but more than that it licences BEHAVIOURS that usually are unacceptable and thus gives many adherents a immense pleasure

I am sick of hearing warnings about how if #Brexit is cancelled it will result in violence and therefore we should go ahead with brexit through fear of racists
A lot of this comes from the right who know their project #Brexit is falling apart but whoever now expects anything better or indeed anything good at all from them. It's when you hear it from left wingers it really angers me
People who are receptive to the idea that immigrants have taken the jobs or depressed wages or pushed up housing costs or stretched public services often have genuine grievances in employment housing or access to health and education which are ignored

The Brexit vote was against our London-centric system. So if there's an economic hit because of a Brexit London voted against, Westminster would make sure the London Banking sector survived but everywhere else...
Many of the problems that pushed people to vote Brexit had nothing to do with the EU. One of those problems was the government choosing to protect the banks who caused the crash with bailouts while ordinary people just got austerity.
The rich took irresponsible risks with the country's future, but they were protected either by moving their money away or by the government and it was those with least who suffered the most.
