We have been asked by our followers to respond to this post - so here goes. First watch Mr Davis's ramblings 🙄, then we will explain the flaws in his argument.
/ Any form of Brexit is by definition, Brexit. If we aren't listed as an EU country, we aren't in the EU. #Tautology
/ The UK voted to leave the EU by 52% to 48%. So a Norway-style brexit - in @SKinnock 's words "leaving the house but not the neighbourhood" is entirely appropriate.
/ Davis claims we would still be under the [loaded term] 'foreign courts'. We would be under the EFTA court - which is far less powerful and intrusive than the ECJ. A quarter or more of the judges on the bench would be UK judges.
/ If we are to be totally free from "foreign courts" after brexit we would have to declare that the UK and UK citizens are exempt from rulings under the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and dozens of other bodies. Is DD advocating this?
/ Mr Davis complains that we would be sending money to the EU:
/ Paying for participation in EU programmes and reciprocal schemes is official government policy, which the Prime Minister has repeatedly stated. Would Mr Davis prefer we stop all european co-operation and joint programmes?
/ N.B. All expert analysis says that an EFTA-based brexit would be cheaper than eu membership. Read more here: efta4uk.eu/wp-content/upl…
/ Mr Davis says the EU would control "three quarters of our laws" under this proposed new model. Unlikely, as we don't think that the EU controls three quarters of the laws of full member states!
/ What makes the "three quarters" claim even more unlikely is that EFTA states are exempt from vast swathes of EU policy.
/ Mr Davis also claims that the EU would not give us a Norway-style deal unless we gave up control of our fishing waters. Surely if this was true, it would equally apply to any post-brexit deal, whether FTA or 'SuperCanada'? So is he now advocating a WTO brexit?
/ The truth is, Mr Davis is disingenuously trying to 'thin the herd' of alternative brexit models, so that MPs will be presented with a false choice between his own preferred choice (Canada+) or WTO brexit (his second choice).
/ But the problem for Mr Davis is, we have already shown why a Canada-style🇨🇦 deal won't work for the UK. No sensible person can still propose it. [See our report here] efta4uk.eu/wp-content/upl…
/ There are even more flaws and omissions in Mr Davis's video, but its getting late and its Saturday night. Goodnight all. Any specific questions, just let us know and we will answer tomorrow/monday. /End
