Clearly says both 🇨🇭and 🇳🇴 get a better deal than EU members.
His vision of the future, with the UK as leading member of a form of Super-EFTA:
So don't you dare tell us now that leavers 'voted for no deal' or that 'WTO is acceptable to all leavers'. We didn't vote for that - we voted for a sensible brexit negotiated with logic and good will on both sides. /End

If Mrs May does get the WA through Parliament, that's the *START* of another countdown ⏳⌛ (until the end of the transition period.) The ERG will then use every trick in the book to delay negotiations for another 18 months or so, in their efforts to leave with no deal.
2/ When we eventually leave with no deal and the economy is tanking, the USA will appear offering us a new deal (which will involve us dropping European product standards and health and safety rules independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
3/ when the backlash comes, the current hard Brexiteers won't be bothered. They will either have left office by then, or successfully convinced their constituents that this was all the nasty EU's fault... [Cont]

BREXIT: Here's an idea - maybe a bad one - what if a MP put forward a Bill to enshrine an alternate version of the Irish backstop in UK law? The speaker picks it, it passes. [CONT...]
2/ PM could go to Brussels, point to the ratified 'Irish backstop Act' and say - look, you wanted a backstop, you have one. To be undone, a majority of MPs would have to vote for it to be repealed. [Cont]
3/ Since no Parliament can bind its successor, MPs would know it wouldn't need to last forever. But since it would need a majority in both houses to undo, the EU would know that it couldn't just be dropped unilaterally when convenient. [Cont]

Final mini-thread of the weekend. [1] Let's imagine that its 2025. The UK has left the EU, and has a basic FTA with the EU. Jacob Rees Mogg is walking down the street when he meets Constituent #1. This constituent is angry.
2/ "Why are you unhappy my plebeian chum?" asks JRM. The constituent answers that the company he works for has just gone bust, and that they were wiped out by competition from a German firm that makes similar products. He asks why the government can't just block German imports.
3/ JRM answers "well my good man, the fact of the matter is, we have signed a Free Trade agreement with the EU, and as a result we can't simply impose quotas or tariffs on German goods, or they could reciprocate".

Both the problem, and the failure to address it, is writ large in May's deal.

Officially UK is NOT joining a customs union....but in the absence of unicorns we clearly are.

Either via the Backstop or when its clear 'other arrangements' dont exist to fix the Irish border /2
Unfortunately May never had the courage to confront her Brexiteers over this fact. She fudged in Lancaster House, and kept fudging.

Recall this time last year, as the Irish reality dawned, senior peeps like @DLidington were flying kites on this.

Arrived at #Wetherspoons in MCR. Tim Martin arrives 10 mins late & tells us "he is going to give us a talk". I thought this was supposed to be a #Brexit debate? 🤔 "Metropolitan elites are pushing for a deal we don't need & if we crash out on #NoDeal we will avoid paying £39bn"
I just had to point out to Tim that it is our own government who hasn't been implementing EU laws on controlling migration and hasn't properly documented #EUcitizens living in the UK, as they do in other EU countries.
He just admitted he needs to go back and "check his books." 🙄
This woman quite rightly pointing out that if we don't pay the £39bn financial obligation... then who else is going to pay @Nigel_Farage's pension? 🤔 Tim says his research hasn't led him to any answers.

2/ Tory Brexiters have repeatedly called for regulations to be slashed, that means health, safety, food and environmental regulations. Often this is couched in terms of the requirements for a trade deal with the US. We all know about chlorinated chicken.
3/ Right-wing think tanks including leading Brexiter MEP Daniel Hannan's IFT and the US Cato Institute called for the NHS to be opened to foreign competition and a bonfire of consumer and environmental regulations

#brexit seems to be all about feeling over fact and this is especially true of the ReesMogg ERG faction of the Tory right.
I never bought the line that #brexit is about Democracy because most of the Tory right had zero enthusiasm for improving democracy in the UK few of them care about unelected house of lords the unfair FPTP electoral system or transparency on the contrary
Most of the Tory right are interested only in constitutional changes that suit them and if anything strive to be as little democratically accountable as possible.

THREAD (1) When the likes of Hannan feel the need to 'brush off' something so critical to the right-wing/neo-con #Brexit wet dream, we find digging a little deeper to be useful. After all, ground breaking 'shadow trade deals' with right-wing US think tanks is no small fish.
(2) In fact, given the growing negativity surrounding the #Brexit negotiations, compounded by the Govts' own damning economic analysis, one would have thought Hannan and Fox et al, would be shouting from the roof tops about their bespoke 'shadow US-UK trade deal.' Wouldn't you?
(3) The problem for our intrepid trade deal making duo, as almost always, is to be found in the detail; just what are, and who is, behind these neo-con US think tanks? Perhaps Daniel would enlighten us?

2 The UK doesn't trade with the non-EU world on WTO terms. First of all, the EU has a number of free trade agreements. Map from WTO site.
