Why?
- library edition books are hardier, designed for hundreds, if not thousands, of read-throughs. Your paperback will not stand the test of time.
- They probably already have a copy
If you think your local library might want actually want some of your discards, PLEASE talk to the librarian.
(Also: when donating to prisons, PLEASE work through a nonprofit. They'll know local rules -- like "no hard backs except law books" -- and needs and can distribute accordingly.)
