Labour NEC due to discuss second referendum today after hundreds of CLPs passed motions saying members should be consulted on whether or not they want one. 3 NEC members will push for a full consultation, citing that Jeremy Corbyn has always argued for more party democracy.
Understand two union delegates will also raise Ian Lavery’s comments over the weekend opposing a second referendum, which they argue are counter to party policy. But NEC still weighted against a People’s Vote.
Those pushing for second referendum argue members can be easily consulted, as per the precedent over whether or not Britain should intervene in Syria. Polls have shown a majority of Labour members would back a People’s Vote.
To be precise, I understand 13,000 submissions have been made to the party’s International Policy Commission - mix of members and CLP motions. Chasing exact number of CLP motions but happy to be corrected if it’s dozens rather than hundreds. Either way, will be discussed at NEC.
Best figure I can get on number of CLP motions is 60. So short of ‘hundreds’, but part of 13k submissions to party in total. Very happy to clarify.
