Calling out hypocrisy is a waste of time. It convinces no one, makes you look like a scold, and the people who do it always fail to resolve the hypocrisy by articulating a consistent principle. Just say what you believe.
I’ve seen tons of these tweets in the past 24 hours: “my opponent is against separating families but supports abortion” and “my opponent is against abortion but supports separating families.” But then neither side comes out and states their philosophy on abortion and immigration.
Not to mention the “hypocrisy” is mostly made up. Majority of Catholics I know are not only anti-abortion, they adopt babies, give money to women’s shelters, support welfare, and oppose capital punishment and family separation at the border. Never praised for being “consistent.”
So why do people do it? Because calling out hypocrisy is not about persuasion or truth. It’s about making your own side feel morally superior and giving yourself permission to also be a hypocrite. “If everyone else is a partisan hack, it’s okay for me to be as well.” Avoid it.
In the end, calling out hypocrisy is a form of what I call “umpire talk” which allows you to conceal your first-order beliefs. Saying what you believe exposes you but it’s MUCH more persuasive. You’ll be amazed and how it draws people in.
