Some really important journalism can be produced by local news outlets in preparation for a Super Bowl.

For the run-up to #SuperBowlLIII , this story breaks some very interesting new ground.

A thread:
Iranian hackers wrecked the city of Atlanta's stripper database.

No, we are not making this up.

The database recording licenses issued by the city of Atlanta to adult entertainment performers was, according to the city, permanently lost in the 2018 cyberattack on city government. on-ajc.com/2HJtBwZ #cybersecurity #ransomware #hacking
The city of Atlanta has been reluctant to say publicly what the lasting damage from the ransomware attack was. We learned of the loss of the stripper database when we asked for a copy of it via an Open Records request a while back. on-ajc.com/2HJtBwZ #cybersecurity #opengov
The city of Atlanta offered to instead give us 5 years of paper records of the adult entertainment licenses -- about 25,000 records, with an estimated cost of $21,000 and 1,200 hours of labor.

Estimated completion time: 2 years

Using something I once heard @branthouston advise at an @IRE_NICAR training, I asked the city instead for a copy of the most recent backup they had of the stripper database.

Their response: There wasn't one.

Towards the end of last year, we learned that the authorities believe the #ransomware attack on the city of Atlanta was carried out by two men in Iran. They were indicted by a federal grand jury. Don't expect them here any time soon.
In summary:
• Iranians wrecked Atlanta's stripper database
• A major American city failed to backup one of its data assets & lost it. Instead all they have is 25k pieces of paper now.

See what you've learned because of #SuperBowl and the @ajc?
