A thread:
A recent Sports Illustrated article by Greg Bishop told an interesting story about Tom Brady. During college, Brady was worried he might fail in the NFL, so he interned for two summers at Merrill Lynch, learning the insurance industry.
At the end of the internship, his boss, Oliver Owens, told Brady he had a future in finance. When Brady said he wanted to try the NFL, his boss told him, "Tom, you're a dime a dozen. You're a clipboard holder, man. You have to start a career. I'll write you a nice referral."
This will fall on some deaf ears because people hate the Patriots, but if you're going to try something extraordinary in life, expect some people to tell you it won't work. Even well meaning people who think they're offering you a kindness will discourage you along the way.
Do the work anyway. Start the business. Write the book. Record the album. Ask that person out. Nobody knows what will happen if you try, but we all know what will happen if you don't.
