This morning the Joint Committee on Human Rights have made 5 proposals on immigration detention. From someone who has acted in many cases involving this broken system, these are sensible and humane parliament.uk/business/commi…
The UK is currently the only state in Europe to allow people to be imprisoned awaiting removal without any time limit. That means they can be - and sometimes are - left in limbo for *years* as incompetent officials, under no time pressure, bumble along trying to remove them
I have acted for claimants and the Home Office (when I used to do govt work) in these cases and I can tell you that the Home Office is corrupted by the lack of time limit - as with any bureaucracy, it is shaped by its rules - the lack of pressure makes for bad decision making
I remember more than one HO employee saying to me that they thought regular detention reviews were not a safeguard but a box to tick to keep people detained. It’s a corrupted system. It needs to end - time pressure (28 day limit is good) will make for better decision making
Meanwhile, the people in the immigration detention estate are often highly vulnerable, with histories of torture and mental illness. They should be looked after in the community not thrown into Yarl’s Wood to be mistreated
