NEW THREAD: The Ipsos Mori political monitor is out. Some highlights.

1. No change in headline voting intention. Lab and Con neck and neck
2. Net satisfaction with Theresa May as PM stands at -25.

33% satisfied with the job she’s doing. 58% dissatisfied.
3. Tory voters broadly positive (64% satisfied) but a sizeable minority (30%) are dissatisfied with the job she’s doing.
4. Why the negativity? Well, one reason is likely that voters think Brexit is going badly. Only 21% are confident that May will get a good deal for Britain - 77% are not confident.
5. Meanwhile look at this. 77% say the govt has done a bad job preparing for a no deal Brexit. Not a lot of faith in the govt about it seems...
6. This feeds through to net satisfaction with the govt overall. Only Major’s was seen as worse than May’s at this point...May’s showing similar figures to Brown’s here...
7. And the context of these numbers is weak economic optimism. Here we track back to 1998 and see numbers almost as bad as they were at the height of the 2008 crash.
So what do we know?

- Low confidence in Brexit seems to be feeding through to low confidence in the govt and the economy

- Neither May nor her govt are popular but neither are they in John Major territory either (yet)

Numbers not ideal for a snap election ...
- Yet the opposition has failed to break through in the opinion polls. Both main parties neck and neck with a slight Tory lead among all voters

- Suggests Labour has an opportunity to capitalise but has not taken it yet. More work to do for the opposition
