Solar / wind fed tax credits ramp down through 2022 (though not out completely for solar). That was deal signed in 2015, under Obama.

My point is that in 2017, with GOP control of Congress and Trump in White House, GOP didn't undo this. Everyone loves solar. Most love wind. 1/
Why does the GOP embrace solar and wind?
A. In polls, Americans list solar and wind as their two favorite energy sources. (seia.org/news/new-poll-…)
B. The congressional districts with the most solar & wind are rural, GOP-held districts. 2/
The policies on industry and agriculture decarbonization I suggested yesterday () would benefit from similar dynamics. If they're seen as *benefiting* industry and farmers, by spurring innovation and giving them things.

Why do carbon taxes fall short? Here's a quick tweet thread on their limitations. For context, I am a carbon tax advocate, was on the board of WA's 2016 revenue-neutral carbon tax initiative, etc.. (for @amcafee & others) 1/
First, let me say that I still love carbon taxes, particularly carbon taxes that are used to reduce other taxes or send direct dividends back to the populace. Carbon taxes are particularly powerful in the electricity sector, where strong alternatives to fossil fuels exist. 2/
In electricity, the prices of solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear are all within a few cents per kwh of the prices of coal and gas, pretty much everywhere in the US.

A $50/ton carbon tax raises price of coal electricity by 5c/kwh, and the price of gas electricity by ~2.5c/kwh. 3/

Hey, it's Friday night. How about a twitter thread of unpopular opinions about climate policy generally, and the #GreenNewDeal specifically. Ready? Here we go. 1/
First, there's much to like about the #GreenNewDeal. But also much that could be better. An ideal climate policy:
a) Makes a meaningful impact.
b) Addresses problems the market isn't addressing itself.
c) Is cost-effective.
d) Is actually passable.

Let's start with impact. 2/
The common wisdom on how climate policies have impact is wrong. Politicians think that a country's climate policy is about reducing that same country's emissions. Nope. The most effective climate policies reduce *global* emissions, or at least provide tools to do so. 3/

1. Solar just hit a stunning new record low price in the US. At these prices, solar kills coal and steals substantial share from Natural Gas. A brief thread.
2. New lowest solar contract price is below *2 cents / kwh*. Even after removing the 30% federal solar investment tax credit, we are looking at solar contracts at 2.6 - 3 cents / kwh. reneweconomy.com.au/warren-buffett…
3. At 2.6 cents / kwh, new solar in the SW of the US is
- One third the cost of building new coal.
- Half the cost of building new natural gas power.

1/ Whenever I ask for evidence of Trump-Russia collusion, I get this circular-reasoning response:
How do you know that there was no collusion?
My answer: I'm NOT claiming there was no collusion, but I see #ZEROEvidence that Trump colluded. SHOW me your EVIDENCE!
2/ If I were to claim that you murdered someone, I would need to provide evidence of this. My claim does not make it have some sort of merit. If you insist you did not do this and want me to stop pushing such as accusation in public b/c it really did not happen, that makes sense.
3/ Would an innocent person remain silent in the face of a massive campaign by those who don't like that person making unsubstantiated claims? Would they not want to put an end to it? If I were #Trump, I would want this thing shut down too as it looks to be a witch hunt.
