A thread on how martial arts is like a school and teaching .....
Firstly, there are clear non-negotiables for which you will be excluded eg using the knowledge learnt outside the class on someone
There are clear routines eg the instructor meets and greets you, you bow in and bow out
There is a clear sense of order, routine, discipline, respect and values
The instructor is the expert and is treated as such
Every lesson begins with retrieval practice, building upon your prior learning
You are directly shown (directly instructed) new knowledge
The syllabus (curriculum) is well thought out and serves as a progression model.
You use the knowledge you learn to tap into new knowledge and enhance your learning
As with all learning it takes time, patience and resilience
The core and the hinterland play their part. As Bruce Lee said ‘do not concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all the heavenly glory.”
Ultimately knowledge begets knowledge and this is how you progress and improve
