A short thread on changing a school’s culture...
Firstly, it is incredibly tough work and you will no doubt meet resistance.
Communicate lots. Talk to as many people as possible and bring them on board with you.
Have a very clear and easy to understand set of values and principles. Do not make things complex.
Over-communicate, endlessly.
Have clear visuals across your school, that emphasise your values BUT ensure they become part of the everyday and aren’t just tokenary
Lead from the front, centre and behind
Mean what you say and ensure that what you want is consistently applied. This is huge and hard.
The big wins..... student behaviour (if applicable) and staff work load.
Do NOT rely on emails. Emails don’t display your intent or integrity.
Restrict your changes to what is actually achievable and to what can be digested. Lots of initiatives sound great BUT they are a ways exception of time if, due to the number, they all fall flat
Don’t change your mind every two seconds
Ensure there is synergy amongst your SLT and middle leaders
Communicate directly to pupils and parents BUT don’t buckle at the first push back you get
Just a few ideas
