Which brings us back to the main negotiations, and the story of the final compromise being knocked together, which will not reopen the backstop in any significant way, but strengthen the review clause 6/
The PM appears to be proposing blackmailing Parliament to support her bad deal at the last minute because no deal would be even worse, as we see from the failures over trade deals. And so the sorry tale of Brexit negotiations rumbles on... 7/ end

It is increasingly clear that the PM is not competent to handle Brexit given months of repeated errors dating back at least to Chequers, where she found the exact point that was unacceptable both to her own party and the EU... 1/
Chequers was followed by the attempt to divide EU countries from the Commission culminating in the Salzburg humiliation, then there was the deal that wasn't, the deal that was being oversold, the postponed vote, the lost vote ignored... [cont] 2/
The failure to promote any compromise after the lost vote, the sudden support for Brady that horrified the EU, now the failure to get a routine vote through Parliament. Is there anyone outside the PM who believes she can get the deal she claims she is now seeking? 3/

There's an important message for future UK policy in many of the first countries rolling over trade agreements - Faroe Islands, Chile, Israel, Eastern and Southern Africa, Southern Africa - all export food and drink products to the UK
Indeed, according to this story, the Southern Africa deal not quite concluded will see the UK making further concessions on wine. It isn't a surprise of course, these are products with high tariffs businesslive.co.za/amp/bd/nationa…
We hear the UK Government is thinking of eliminating all tariffs, or tariffs on products we do not produce. But this will reduce the incentive for agricultural exporters to agree to trade deals, as well as reducing the preference for developing countries

Brexit already doing massive harm to the UK. Over 200 examples of job losses, lost investment, police & army prepping, companies moving assets to the EU or redomiciling. Meanwhile, the Government burns through £billions chasing a nutty no deal Brexit. Real life, not project fear!
The Government has spent £4.2 billion pounds on Brexit preparations (£2.2 billion in previous Budgets, plus an additional £2 billion in the most recent Budget.) 1/205

So the ticklish moment awaits.

Consistent with @tombradby am told #Brexit Withdrawal Agreement texts were in London overnight, came back to Brussels this morning. That they are not finally closed, but the EU is "waiting for verdict" to decide next steps. /1

But we wait for Cabinet to be called to decide, essentially, if the 'review mechanism' for the Irish backstop really does create some kind of 'exit clause' for UK.

1. There's a subtle shift in tone from the ultras this morning who are now pushing for a Canada+ agreement. That + is going to have to do a lot of work because we'd still be subject to third country controls thus having a similarly damaging effect to no deal #Brexit.
2. Again the Brexiters are ducking the issue that to have frictionless trade you need full regulatory harmonisation. If we don't have that then Mrs May will have to sign the NI backstop. Chequers is an attempt to fudge this question but it is at least a nod to reality.
3. Mrs May has attempted to bridge the unbridgeable divide. Chequers is an attempt at regulatory alignment while maintaining a level of regulatory sovereignty - which is tolerable but not to the EU. They won't go for it.
