I’m that draconian dad who blocks the youtube domain on the kids devices. It remains an unsafe product for families. It puts parents on the frontlines to protect their children from content that would never make it to a television screen. (FCC liability vs. CDA sec 230 immunity)

I think I might favor the idea floated by @gchaslot (yes?) of narrowing CDA§230 immunity to put FCC-style liability on platforms for the content they recommend. Puts a cost on externalities of reco engines juicing the population with toxic waste for shilling fuzzy ad metrics.
This is the correct take.
In case you want to nuke YouTube on your offspring’s iOS devices go to Settings > Screentime > {Spawn} > Content and Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content > Never Allow > add “youtube.com”

Confirm YouTube and YouTube Kids apps are deleted/blocked.
It’s not just parents. Advertisers are blocking YouTube for the toxic waste dump it actually is. nytimes.com/2019/02/20/tec…

Despite specific questions about Chancellor by UK Parliament and US Congress probes, Facebook refuses to explain details about his hire and why he was dismissed per internal investigation. It remains suspicious to this day, moreso after @podehaye’s FOI on his CU log scrubbing.

Reading adtech lobby’s statements for Congressional committee hearings on privacy this week. They cite Cambridge Analytica as example of harms. Then claim GDPR and CCPA do nothing to prevent this type of harm. This is appallingly false disinformation given UK ICO’s enforcement.
The data sharecroppers are locked and loaded to water down a national privacy law that preempts state’s rights for the least possible concession. If you have a Rep in House or Senate committee, let em know you demand tough concessions for preemption on privacy. GDPR or better.
Data privacy debate in 2019 is boiling down quickly to state’s rights vs preemption on an issue that is broadly bipartisan. Roughly 80% Rs, Ds, Indys agree on data privacy issues. Lawmakers could get crushed between their consituents and industry donors if this debate gets testy.

Went to Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan today. Official population at 53,967, according to @UNHCR as of February 2018. All Syrian #refugees.

In many ways it was not what I expected.
First thing you notice is how remote the location is — some 100 kms east of Amman; 20 kms from Azraq town; 75 kms to Saudi Arabia; 255 kms to Iraq; and 90 kms to the Syrian border — from which its inhabitants fled.
At the same time, the harshness of the setting — a hardscrabble, sprawling 15 square km patch, scratched, etched and stretched out of endless rolling desert.

The perimeter was equally formidable, with security fencing, official patrols, check points and razor wire.
