Agreed. I get too many emails and letters from mums telling me their sons attitude to school changed *partly* because of man to deny there is *any* influence: if there was none brands would not spend so much ££ to advertise in the medium..
What is debatable (to me at least) is the extent of that influence, its relationship with pre existing factors and how most people criticism stops at the artists. A better question might be how much less violence would we have if we deleted all *negative* rap music?...
Drill is on the one hand celebrating actual murders that have happened and deserves critique there BUT on the other hand putting many young men who are heavily involved into positions where they actually have things to loose and consequently start to change...
There are many actual real life beefs over which people have died that are being squashed because man don't wana fuck up the money now.. even many of us *good* rappers have mates that have done terrible things so the line is not clear cut...
Young boys can look at me and see the route I chose takes 15 years of work to come good, some of these kids aint got 15 years to get out of what they are in and if they *really* wanted to stay in it they clearly would NOT be trying to have music careers in the first place...
I know many people might look at my content and expect me to just *condemn* but I can't really. My OG's all did 10+, all four of my closest cousins done bird as did half my friends.. and that really aint the half of it. Me speaking well and reading books has not erased any of tht
One of my cousins dads died in police custody, one of the others got shot and killed, other family members been sectioned other addicted. It's not actually fun. Man are out here coming to their parents funerals in handcuffs and going back to do the other 15....
Maybe Drill/Rap is not *negative* enough, actually. What made Cadet so special was that he put it all out there, all the pain all the insecurity, all the abuse, the addictions, the whole nine. We need more brutal honesty if anything... maybe?
