I want to share a heartbreaking story that I told at the Indivisible Chester County Candidates’ Forum. It’s about an elderly couple in Exton who, like so many of us including my family, were lied to and forced into signing an easement back in 2015 before they knew what would flow

through the Mariner East pipelines so close to their home. They now know how dangerous these products are, and are concerned that in the event of a leak they have no way to evacuate. They can’t travel the required half mile on foot, and a vehicle engine can ignite the ethane,

butane or propane. They understand that there is no credible public warning system, because phones can ignite these gases. Those pipes are about 50 feet from their house.

Last week they invited me to their home, because the land agent had returned to negotiate a new, temporary

easement. Once I arrived asking for details, the land agent abruptly stopped negotiating. Sunoco wants to clear all the trees and turn their small backyard into a drill site for THREE YEARS. During construction the noise even inside their house would be unbearable, Monday through

Saturday from 7am to 7pm. The vibrations could damage their home, as has happened to other homes in Chester County. Removing the trees that border the stream may cause flooding. Their biggest concerns: He is 84 years old; how would they sell their house in the next three years if

they need to move to assisted living? His favorite thing when the weather gets warm is to take his coffee outside and enjoy his yard of over 50 years. Where will he go now, he wonders?

Thousands of families in Chester County have had Mariner East forced upon them.

As Chester County Commissioner I will use my position of authority and my voice to stand up for the people of Chester County against Mariner East and any future pipelines that put our public safety, quality of life and economic

welfare at risk for corporate gain. I will never claim to be powerless while our communities are exploited.
