THREAD: Religion and Finance: PART 2 – COUNTRIES, STATES & INDIVIDUALS.
NOTES:

1. Please start with Part 1 so that you can understand my views and motivations.
2. I will present the data without commentary.
3. It is NOT my opinion. It is DATA.

1/ Part 2 will try to answer two research questions (RQ):

RQ1. Do religious COUNTRIES/STATES/CITIES/INDIVIDUALS do better financially than their secular counterparts?
RQ 2. Do the wealthiest individuals have strong religious beliefs?
RQ 1a: Do religious COUNTRIES do better financially?
The Answer is NO.

Religiosity is negatively correlated with economic development. Nations that are economically developed tend to have nonreligious people and poorer nations tend to be more religious.
RQ 1a (Cont): Do religious COUNTRIES do better financially? NO.

The cluster at the top of this chart – Ghana, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Colombia etc = High religiosity, low income.

The cluster at the bottom – Japan, Australia, Canada etc = Low Religiosity, High income.
RQ 1b.
Do religious STATES/CITIES do better financially? NO.

We do not have global data for this so we will use the US as a proxy.
Once again, religion has a negative effect on states’ economic performance
States with higher religious attendance have lower average income.
RQ 1c.
Do religious INDIVIDUALS do better financially than their secular counterparts?
The answer is NO.

The data shows that religion is a bigger part of the lives of poor people. 95% of poor people are religious while only 47% of relatively affluent people are.
RQ2. Do the wealthiest individuals have strong religious beliefs? NO.

Introducing Forbes richest 10 humans.
1.Jeff Bezos – Agnostic
2.Bill Gates – Agnostic, wife is Catholic.
3.Warren Buffett – Agnostic
4.Bernard Arnault – nonreligious Catholic
5.Carlos Slim Helú - Maronite.
RQ 2. Do the wealthiest individuals have strong religious beliefs? NO.

6.Mark Zuckerberg – Was an Atheist but is returning to Jewish faith
7.Larry Ellison – Atheist
8.Charles Koch - Nonreligious
9.David Koch's – Nonreligious
10. Armancio Ortega Gaona – Catholic, nonreligious
These datasets suggest that religion may NOT be the path to financial prosperity for countries, cities, and individuals.

Perhaps the role of religion is to strengthen the heart, not the pocket.

Part 3 will now focus on Finance and Pentecostalism.
