2/ South Korean blockchain service provider Coinplug is leading the way with 26 granted patents, followed by familiar companies in Bank of America (16), IBM (15), Mastercard (8), and Accenture (8).
3/ IBM has applied for more than 100 blockchain-related patents in the last six months. Walmart and Alibaba have also been active. On the other side of the spectrum, Dell has withdrawn the most patents in the last six months

1/ I am a crypto skeptic and I believe there are a lot of things to be skeptical about. But there are also some things to be excited about. And I think one of the most positive developments is how bitcoin is seeing an increased interest in Venezuela.

2/ Prices double every 19 days in Venezuela. The annual inflation rate is now approximately 1,300,000%, while the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects it might spike to 10,000,000% in 2019. And this is passed onto the people that are living in poverty struggling to survive.
3/ Arguably, one of Bitcoin’s most important qualities is an inflation hedge useful primarily in countries suffering from irresponsible monetary and fiscal policy. Bitcoin is more portable than gold, divisible and much harder to be confiscated by an authoritarian regime.

2/ In a little under a year since being live on mainnet, there are now nearly 2,800 nodes with active channels and about 20,000 total channels. The steeper growth of nodes as of late could coincides with user-friendly SW and HW solutions hitting the market (@CasaHODL and others).
3/ It’s also worth pointing out that the average number of channels per node has been steadily increasing throughout the last year. There are now nearly 8 channels per each node.

1/ This week I looked at exchange wallets. There are currently approximately 716k bitcoins (4% of circulation), 7M ether (7% of circulation) and 1.2b tether (64% of circulation) held in the publicly known wallets of crypto exchanges.

2/ It’s important to note that:

* the included exchanges could control even more wallets, which are not known

* some major exchanges including Coinbase and BitMEX do not have publicly known wallets so they are not included in this summary
3/ Including even the non-public wallets, it is estimated that at least 10% of bitcoins and 15% of ether in circulation are currently stored at exchanges.

As a late holiday gift, I’ll summarize 3 excellent articles evaluating the tax cut after 1 yr. (The quality of tax journalism is moving inversely to tax policy.) Still, all 3 miss 1 key point IMHO. [thread]

All 3 pieces document 3 clear impacts of the cuts so far (Slate summary below):
--big revenue loss
--surge in after-tax corp profits & stock buybacks
--short-term economic stimulus
For the cuts to have more than near-term growth impacts, they’d have to boost biz investment a lot more than we’ve seen so far, though these are early days. Both WSJ and Slate show “muted” investment results, especially controlling for energy prices, which are set globally.
