For some people it's as if it's always 1972 and McGovern has just lost to Nixon and the Democrats better learn their lesson and be more like Republicans.
As if the problem of American politics since the 80s isn't the rightward radicalization of the Republican Party combined with the electoral college and gerrymandering, but rather an overly progressive Democratic party. Sheesh.
As for illiberalism, I think most historians would tell you that a significant chunk of the conservative electorate from the 1950s on has been comprised of illberal folks of various stripes, whether it be southern segregationists, sexists, or theocrats.
Left illiberalism is certainly a thing, but is trivial in comparison to right illiberalism since the 1950s. The right illiberals were pals with GOP leaders and major candidates (think Buchanan), the left illiberals were largely outside the Democratic party.
Sorry, should not have just singled out *southern* segregationists. White backlash to integration was a national thing, not just a southern thing.
