I actually sympathise with the idea that soft Brexit changes could be made to future relationship document within three months. But why put an arbitrary impossible-to-shift deadline on it?
I mean, I don't want to go down to really basic tactical judgement but: what if you're wrong?
When a normal, self-interested negotiating team is planning it typically wants to maximise its room to manoeuvre.
So sure. Maybe you can negotiate it in three months. Or maybe - who knows, it's crazy I know -there'll be complications. A hiccup over state aid, or free movement, or British input in FTA talks, or just parliament doesn't like the look of it.
And then you'll want more fucking time.
There is literally no down side to a long extension. A50 states you can leave when you have a deal. Same presumably applies during extension.
So getting a long one does not mean you have to use it. But getting a short one means you're proper buggered if you need more time.
No rational actor would behave this way. The only explanation is that Brexiters and their petrified puppet govt are now a religious cult.
