I went looking for this story today and listen, I'm glad @Facebook's leaders are....doing the bare minimum to be decent human beings, but the robotic quality of the talking points... and why only just now again? I just. washingtonpost.com/technology/201…
I'm typically the first person to give a big company credit when it does the right thing, but my trust levels with @facebook remain beyond low. Whatever changes they make seem farcically ad hoc and only after long, heavy external pressure. Very little detectable heart here.
"We already made the change where we flag live suicides and now we're totally going to do that w/ mass shootings now too." What?

Got news for you, Boeing: your policy of donating to every administration doesn't excuse you from having donated to a corrupt one. This goes for every company with similar donation policies in place.

Would you be ok with @Facebook, @YouTube, and @Twitter putting #livestream content on a brief delay in the interest of better moderating hate content on their platforms?
Please understand that invoking the scale question (how social media platforms could reasonably monitor the scale of content they receive) is a talking point that protects the companies' ability to keep doing things exactly as they are today. Poorly.
These companies just broadcast the murder of 50 people across the globe in real time. We know from @CaseyNewton's reporting & others that moderators are treated terribly & paid badly. I encourage you to ask questions that challenge tech companies right now versus protecting them.

For all the promise of AI & machine learning in identifying malicious content, it’s extremely not what I want to hear about today. I don’t want to hear better algorithms could fix this. They could improve things, sure, but larger problem is at a leadership level, not a tech one.
That video didn’t go out b/c the algorithm isn’t smart enough yet or the abuse policy needs a new clause. It happened because tech leaders let it. They delivered an on demand global audience to a fame-craving violent extremist like it was a g.d. subscription box meal kit.
So what I’d dearly love right now is for the leaders of @Facebook and @Google and @Twitter talk deeply and with humility about their ethical responsibilities. As human beings. To society. To democracy. To the news. To the truth. To marginalized people. To faith based communities.

Jungkook stared at the enclosed envelope sitting on his desk, his lips pursed tightly and his arms crossed over his chest as he let his chair carry the weight of his body. His dress shoes clicked on the floor as he tapped his foot, the sharp tap echoing through the office.

One definition of kindness combines several qualities: friendliness, generosity and considerateness, which can be the first antidote for ALL of the shame about sex we internalise, carry around and use to build our fragile moralities.
A lot of the things we first hear about sex come from places of fear, anger and avoidance from our parents, speculation, uncertainty, mockery or scorn from older siblings or friends, fire and brimstone from religion (especially for women/queer folk), etc.

Thank you. I used to teach across the street from Lafayette Park here in LA - the park where MS-13 got its start in the 1980's when it was just a small group of frightened kids who wanted protection from the other local gangs. I've known literally dozens of MS-13 gang members. 1/
Just like with every single dehumanized segment of society ever in history, the bad apple fallacy is in play here. Yes, members of MS have done some truly horrifyingly horrible things....

...but there are nearly 50k members worldwide, 30k here in the US and the vast majority 2/
are not only human (they're all human, even the horrible ones, btw), but are generally decent human beings who have been forced by circumstance to join a criminal enterprise and are still involved bc they are trapped. 3/

One of the first more successful/costly ads, from 2015. Posts promising "updates" (including one about the Charleston shooting) seem to perform better so far. Also notice targeting- Baltimore, Ferguson, and surrounding.
