At our @Airbnb_in home #VayuKutir, we have now introduced a delightful new experience - A ride on the the #Kangra Valley, #Himachal toy train from Kopar Lahar (around 20-km from from Vayu Kutir) to #Baijnath and back. This is about the best time in the year for the experience.
Kopar Lahar is a quaint British era railway station on a gently sloping lush green hillside. A nearby clear water stream with a small dam and a lot of birds make it an excellent picnic spot all by itself. There are no crowds even when there is a train on the platform.
The heritage look of the Kopar Lahar station, is evident. The clock on the station, as on all stations on the line, is imported from the UK for authenticity. The 2hr 30 min / 60 km journey to Baijnth costs a princely Rs 15/- Yes, even the ticket cost is heritage!
Kopar Lahar is a temp end point (due track breach ahead) where the engine reverses ends,. The heritage railway service extends to Pathankot. Currently, onward journey to Pathankot involves taking a taxi / bus to the next station Jawalamukhi road, circumventing the breach.
The train is as much of a delight from the inside as from the outside. You pay a princely amount, remember! The HP government indulges its people running the heritage train at a great loss, and ironically keeping it a secret from the rest of the country and foreign tourists.
The journey gets delightful almost as soon as it starts. The first photo shows the train pulling into Kangra railway station. The pristine environs are evident. After leaving Kangra, the train travels along Nugal khad
After a while, across the khad, you see Tanda medical college and its staff residential quarters, and then you travel some more along Nugal.
I have a lot of photos of the scenes that mesmerize you enroute to Baijnath. Here are two sample picked at random.
The Baijnath station has the same heritage look from outside & inside as other stations along the track. Our guest looked delighted with the journey. On return, sipping a drink in the evening, he eloquently expressed his incredulity that he had never heard of the heritage train!
For those of you who may have wondered...this is #VayuKutir on the banks of Pong reservoir river Beas at Dehra Gopipur, Kangra! #Himachal
