With increasing disaffection with the federation a theme for some in #abvote , it's worth reading the latest 2019 Survey of Canadians by the @Environics_Inst and many partner organizations. Super interesting and important work. environicsinstitute.org/projects/proje…
I'll highlight a couple results here. First, A majority of people in almost all provinces feel they aren't getting the respect they deserve. Interesting.
But the share feeling a lack of respect in Alberta is definitely on the rise. Now over 70%!
But in Quebec, which may come as a surprise to many in Alberta, most *also* feel the province is not treated with the respect is deserves. Ontario feels okay, though (except during financial crisis). Canada is tough to govern.
How much influence does your province have? Few Albertans think it has any, but that's true in most provinces (except Ontario).
Does the West get ignored in national politics? Most think so. But most have always thought so. Little change over the past 30 years. Perhaps a slight improvement actually.
BUT, a big change in separatist sentiment. Unclear how serious respondents are, but now 56% of Albertans in the survey said "it may as well go it on their own." 53% in SK. 44% in BC. 35% in MB.
Last result is key. Canada is a federation, and tough to govern, precisely because regions differ so much. And most respondents realize this! That's reassuring.
Is the federal government relevant? Almost *half* of western respondents it's virtually irrelevant. Unsure why one might say this, as one need only look at their pay stub to see the relevance of federal policy (PIT, EI, CPP, etc).
SO, there's lots of tension in the country (unavoidably). Do Canadians feel confidence that we can resolve our differences? Most have at least some confidence. That's good. But one in three Prairie folks doesn't think so.
Personal reflection: Sometimes I think certain leaders deliberate amplify feelings of alienation in Alberta. But these results suggest such feelings are found everywhere in Canada with surprising strength. So, some in AB might 'exploit' such feelings, but don't cause them.
Anyway, there's a *huge* amount of data in the @Environics_Inst report. Check it out at environicsinstitute.org/projects/proje… with detailed data tables at environicsinstitute.org/docs/default-s… /thread
